Division of Phoniatrics and Speech Language Therapy

Phoniatrics and speech therapy are medical disciplines that deal with the diagnosis and treatment of the following conditions:

  • Disorders of the voice,
  • speech development,
  • language,
  • speech (dysarthria, dyslalia, dysglossia),
  • resonance (open and closed nasality),
  • fluency (stuttering, cluttering),
  • swallowing (dysphagia),
  • as well as childhood hearing and perception disorders, including dyslexia.

In Austria, a specialization in phoniatrics involves the diagnosis and treatment of the voice, speech, language and swallowing disorders, as well as childhood hearing disorders. The specialization lasts 24 months after completing the specialist training in ENT medicine and can be done at our clinic. For further information, please refer to the current specialization regulations.

Therapeutic measures include both conservative treatments (medication, speech therapy) and surgical procedures on the larynx, which primarily serve to improve and preserve the voice – referred to as phonosurgery.

Logopedics (Speech therapy) deals with counseling, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and scientific research into disorders of spoken and written language, speech, breathing, voice, oral function, hearing and swallowing. Speech therapists work independently according to medical instructions. Our goal is to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care for outpatients and inpatients using internationally recognized methods.
